Situation awareness leadership
Leadership can be performed in different ways in a group. There are authoritarian leaders, let-go leaders and democratic leaders. What kind of leader is best at all times ”disputes the learned”, but there is also another form of leadership, namely situational leadership. The way in which a manager exercises his leadership must be able to be varied. In one situation, the manager must lead employees, in a compelling and distinct way, in another in a supportive way and in yet another with an understanding and investigative attitude (Vroom & Jago, 2007).
The theory of situational leadership is based on the fact that the leader should adapt his leadership based on the situation and the employees, in order to achieve efficiency. Effective leadership is considered to be part of the concept of quality in leadership. The theory of situational leadership is based on four different leadership styles (Northouse, 2010)
- Strongly controlling and weakly supportive style is called instructive leadership style.
- Strongly leading and strongly supportive style is called persuasive / advisory leadership style and means that the leader gives advice and coaches his employees.
- Weak governance and strong supportive style is called participating leadership style and means that the leader supports his employees.
- Slightly controlling and weakly supportive style is called for delegating leadership style. Delegate (Jacobsen & Thorsvik, 2011). The leader should use the right leadership style depending on the maturity level of the group / employees and the task. The leader can decide whether to act task-oriented or relationship-oriented, or combine both (Hersey & Blanchard, 1969, 1977, 1982, in Huges et al., 2002).
